The ancient Greeks perfected the use of columns which supported their temple roofs and porches. Traditionally, they were made of stone or wood, but todays columns are also available in low-maintenance, composite or fiberglass materials. The most common styles are the round or square, tapered or straight, and fluted or smooth.
